Old Macs

September 7, 2010 · Filed Under Hardware · Comment

Check this out. We have been talking to one of our Mac users about upgrading to a newer Mac. In just a few days word got out that he was going to give up his old Mac and someone was already asking for it. That is always the way with our old Macs, somebody always wants the hand me downs. You don’t see anyone doing that with PeeCee’s! We hardly have any old Macs on the shelf except some Power PC stuff that is going to be disposed of soon.

Failing HD Test

August 29, 2010 · Filed Under Hardware · Comment

This article is a pretty good procedure for testing to see if your hard drive is bad. The main symptom they list is if your HD is freezing periodically. However, it has been my experience that sometimes hard drives just blink out. No warning whatever. Bizarre. The article is worth your time. Check it out.

Migration Heaven

I am a very fortunate man. I was able to put the dead HD in a sled and use Migration Assistant to move my user account to my new HD. It took about 1 1/2 hours and it came across very nicely. That saved me a days worth of reinstalling and recovering stuff. Very cool.

The other day I was working on a Powerbook that was “acting up”. I checked it out with one of my favorite programs, Drive Genius from Prosoft Engineering. What did it tell me?

Dead Hard Drive

Last week one of the people at work brought me a dead LaCie external hard drive. It just stopped working. He used it for his Time Machine backup. I tried to resurrect it, but nothing that I tried would get the drive to mount. Just to be clear, this is an external, commercial grade hard drive.

Hard Drive Shuffle

Today I was assigned the task of installing Parallels 5 on a MacBook. When I started the MacBook it took about 3 minutes to boot up. Think there might be something wrong there. When I ran a couple of different disk utilities on the machine they reported the hard drive was failing.

Time Capsule Replacement

July 12, 2010 · Filed Under Hardware · Comment

Anybody have a Time Capsule that was purchased between February–June 2008? Apple finally posted a knowledgebase article on models with serial numbers from xx807–xx814 having deficient components. Apple has said they will repair or replace the unit if it ends up not powering on within 3 years of purchase. I have one of these units. I hope it dies before 3 years is up.

iMac Hard Drive

I upgraded my early ’08 iMac’s hard drive over the weekend. I replaced the 320 GB hard drive with a 1 TB hard drive. Hopefully, I am good for the duration of this machine. Everything went well. It is nice to have the right tools for the job. Turn the page for a few photos.
