Mac Backup Strategy
If you have been into computers long you know that having a backup plan is a quintessential piece of the pie. Backup strategies at home are fairly straight forward. But, when you get into a corporate environment, it can get complicated.
Missing System Services
Have any of you ever had System Services turn up missing? I haven’t, but I have friends who have. Here is a fix if you are not afraid of the Terminal. Perhaps just a good old fashion restart might fix this issue.

ASD
Apple has good diagnostic tools. One of them is Apple Service Diagnostic (ASD). Apple makes a version of ASD for each machine they make. Some versions of ASD work for more than one machine. So, why do I bring this up?
File Selection
If you are new to the Mac this is a nice little article on file selection behaviors. The author does include some comparisons with Windows OS. If you are an experienced Mac user there won’t be anything new here.

10.6.3 v.1.1 Update
Apple released an update to the 10.6.3 update. What? Yes, we are updating the updaters these days. Not every machine will need it, mine did not. Just use software update to check and see if you do. Here is a short article about it.

10.6.3 Color Calibration
Well, so far so good. Everything seems to be running pretty well with the 10.6.3 update. I use lots of third party add-ons and shareware, so far all is running well. One thing of note, my iMac reverted to the Apple iMac color calibration.
10.6.3 Update
I have today off from work so I did the 10.6.3 update. Yes, it was the usual drill. I downloaded the “Combo” updater. I cloned my iMac to my external backup drive. I restarted in “Safe Boot” mode by holding down the “Shift” key. I installed 10.6.3 and restarted. Everything appears to be fine. If something comes up I will let you know, it all looks pretty good.

DNS Servers
If you are having problems with slow page loads in Safari or slowness in retrieving email then you need to read this article about alternative DNS servers. I have used OpenDNS before and it has worked well, although these days it seems to be a toss up for speed between my ISP and other DNS alternatives.

Time Machine No Workie
I have been trying to setup Time Machine to an internal hard drive on my Mac Pro at work. For some reason it keeps erring out about half way through the process. The error message doesn’t really tell you anything, it just says there is an error.
Running Low On RAM
This is a very helpful article if you are using a 15″ or 17″ unibody MacBook Pro and seem to be running out of memory from time to time. Just the information about Activity Monitor is worth the read.
