Snow Leopard Root User
I had to enable the “root user” yesterday on a machine I was working on. That is done through the Directory Utility app which used to be located in the Utilities folder. Not anymore. Here is an article on how to enable the root user in Snow Leopard. Caution: do not enable the root user unless you know what you are doing on your Mac and absolutely need to have it enabled!

Top Case
We replace top cases (the whole keyboard and trackpad area) on MacBooks quite frequently at work. To be fair, mostly on older machines. Our MacBook is about three years old and is starting to show it’s age.
Combined PDF’s
If you ever find the need to combine PDF documents then this article about the Preview application will be of use to you.

New Hard Drive
I am planning to install a new, 1 TB hard drive in my iMac over the next few months. My current drive is 320 GB and is getting a bit full. That means I will need a new external drive for my cloned backup copy of my hard drive.
Corporate Entourage
If you are in a corporate environment and using Exchange Server 2007 and Office 2008 on the Mac it looks like staying with the Entourage email client is the way to go. Check out this insightful article. Apple’s Snow Leopard Exchange Server capabilities and Mail app just are not quite there yet.

Hard Drive Docking Station
At work we frequently have to transfer data from an old hard drive to a new, larger HD and generally just test hard drives for read/write viability. We use a slew of external hard drive docking stations. We call them sleds.
Mounting Shared Machines
One of our readers wrote in with a question just recently. He is working in a corporate environment with lots of PC’s and needed to be able to mount one of the PC’s on his desktop for quick, repeated access. Here is his question verbatim:
iBank Update
The more I use iBank the more I like it. Keep in mind I do not have tons of different investment accounts, but so far it is working great for me. I am running Quicken 2007 on my MacBook which is going to remain on Leopard 10.5 for a while. Banking is a big deal, but I encourage you to do your homework on iBank and if you think it will work for you run it alongside Quicken for a while. We need to support people that are providing financial solutions on the Mac.
