Backups & Hard Drives
One of the jobs we do most is install new hard drives in peoples computers. Occasionally, people just want and/or need a larger hard drive. So, we install the much larger hard drive into their Mac, and usually talk them into putting the older drive into an enclosure to use for back up or some other type of storage. However, I want to mention two observations about these hard drive replacements.
Cracked Screens
Yes, it is true. Some of the 27″ iMacs are arriving with cracked screens. To put it more accurately, the glass on the front, not the LCD, is cracked. We have received a couple of these at work and had to send for new glass. It seems to be a fairly common occurrence.
VMWare Fusion Image Enlarge
The other day we had someone come in who wanted to enlarge their VMWare Fusion image. He was using Windows XP. Not being PeeCee guys we worked on it for a while, but had to move on to other things. However, since I use Fusion at home I thought I would give it a try on my own.
iBank Updates
The last couple of updates to iBank (I just installed 3.5.4) have broken my online downloads from my bank. The program tells you to setup online banking again, but when you do this it still doesn’t work. Through some trial and error I have learned how to fix this problem.
iPhoto Maintenance
This is a great article on doing maintenance in iPhoto. I have done some of these things and they were very helpful. Some of them would be considered preventive maintenance.

VMWare Fusion 3
I have used VMWare Fusion for about two years now and have been quite satisfied with it’s performance and functionality. Just recently I have updated my iMac to Snow Leopard. I have used VMWare Fusion version 2 in Snow Leopard and it seemed to work OK.
Safari 4.0.4 Fix
Speaking of Safari 4.0.4 my research on people having Safari problems after the 4.0.4 update has yielded a fix of sorts. This fix isn’t a cure all, but it seems to help several people.
Recent Updates
Lately I have updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.2 and Safari to 4.0.4 with no problems. I know people had problems with the new Safari update, but all is well here on the update front. You?

Snow Leopard Update
Well, I waited a couple of days on the 10.6.2 update. Things didn’t look too bad for updaters, most people updating without incident. So, I updated my iMac this morning, and, no problems. Here is what I did.
Snow Leopard Overheating/Fans
Some people are reporting overheating problems in Snow Leopard which causes loud fan noise. If this is happening to you one thing to do is to look at your systems active processes using Apple’s Activity Monitor application. It can be found in your Utilities Folder which is inside your Applications Folder.
