Teching Mac vs. PC
In my new position I do tech support on Macs and PC’s. In some ways the problems are the same whether they are email issues or trying to figure out how to do things in Word or Excel. However, there are areas that are vastly different.
The PC has some internal utilities you can use to fix a few things, but the usual solution in the PC world is to re-image the drive. You re-install the OS, over and over again. People keep their files on an external server, if they are smart.
On the Mac OS you can actually fix stuff! You can run some Apple or third party utilities and repair the operating system. Yes, you have to do a re-install (Apple calls it an Archive and Install) of the OS at times, but most of the time the current OS can be repaired by installing updates and/or running utility programs. What is the advantage of this? Time. I can usually repair a machine in 15-20 minutes. An Archive and Install of the OS on the Mac may take 45 minutes or maybe even an hour to an hour and a half from start to finish.
Things are going well in my new position even though a bit hectic at times. Learning new processes and procedures is stressful, but since I have worked at this place before things are starting to fall into place fairly well. More later.
