Snow Leopard Archive & Install

Screenshot 1Not really. I have done several re-installs of Snow Leopard since it’s release. The one thing I miss from previous versions of the Mac OS is the Archive and Install feature.

Sometimes things are bad enough in the OS to just set it all aside by doing an Archive and Install, setting aside the OS and installing a clean, new OS.

Today was a case in point. The Snow Leopard OS, 10.6.2, on one of our MacBook Pros was corrupt. But, you can’t really do an Archive and Install with Snow Leopard. So, I did what I have done in the past, I reinstalled the OS over the top. Somehow, this just works. I have done this several times and it has worked very well each time.

I am not sure how it does it, but Snow Leopard is smart when it comes to repairing the current OS. This time was no exception. When it was done I was left with 10.6.0. I installed the 10.6.2 combo updater, restarted and all was well. The machine was running great once again.

I know it is not an Archive and Install, but it seems to work just as good. Don’t be afraid to do a re-install of the Snow Leopard OS if it is needed. Although, a prior backup of your user account is still not a bad idea.
