ARD

Have you ever used Apple Remote Desktop (ARD)? Yes, I know it can use some improvements, but it still is a very cool application. We do a lot of things with it at my work, much like this.

Frequently, we have to redo a machine, reinstall the OS, get it ready for a new user. But, what we do is get the machine going on the network, usually in one of our tech rooms and then go back to our desk log into the machine with ARD to finish all the installs.

Today I was setting up an older G5 for someone. I did an archive and install with a Leopard disk and then put the machine on the network. I went back to my desk and logged into the G5 with ARD. I proceeded to do all the OS updates including updates to Microsoft Word 2008. After several restarts (ARD reconnects each time) I put the machine on Active Directory (AD) using ARD. Basically, I setup the machine almost entirely using ARD from my desk in between doing other things. Super convenient.

You can do other things with ARD and I will talk about them in later issues. Until then . . . .
