Time Machine No Workie

March 7, 2010 · Filed Under Operating System

I have been trying to setup Time Machine to an internal hard drive on my Mac Pro at work. For some reason it keeps erring out about half way through the process. The error message doesn’t really tell you anything, it just says there is an error.

I did a bunch of research online, but the recommended solutions did not work. I use Time Machine at home to a Time Capsule and it runs great. I rarely have any problems. So, what to do.

I decided to go back to one of my old standbys, Déjà Vu. This is a great little Preference Pane that allows you to backup files and folders to another location, even over a network. All I really needed to do was backup my Desktop and Documents Folders. I can always reinstall the OS and/or applications if they get corrupted.

So, I downloaded and installed Déjà Vu and proceeded to setup two weekly backups of the Documents and Desktop Folders to my other internal hard drive. I made a manual backup the first time and then just set the schedule to weekly. It is very cool. Now at least I have a backup of the most important stuff on my machine.

Time Machine is the greatest, but once in a while it just isn’t the tool for the job. Check out Deja Vu, it may be just what you need.
