In keeping with my latest articles on Application Deletion software I thought I would mention the Hazel scripting App has this type of functionality. Hazel calls it “App Sweep”. I know I must sound like a broken record talking about the Hazel App so much, but this may be a way to kill two birds with one stone. You can have the Hazel App and all that it does AND an application deletion program all in one. Here is how this works.
Begin by opening your Hazel App in the System Preference Pane third party area:
Once you are in the Hazel App click on the Trash Tab:
All you have to do is click on the “Enable App Sweep” button and you are all set. Now, when you drag an application to the Trash on your Mac it brings up a window with all the other little files that the App had placed in your system. Here I deleted an App called VersionManager:
It is a good idea to take a look at these files just to make sure you will not be deleting anything you should keep. However, I have used the App Sweep function in Hazel a few times now and it seems to work quite well. I have not encountered any problems, it appears to be quite thorough.
I have one caveat here. Sometimes when you install an update to a program the installer just installs a completely new version of the App and throws the old version in the Trash. When that happens Hazel will see that App in the Trash and bring up the related files window like the one above. In this case I think you should keep the files it is talking about because the new version of that particular application may need them. I am not totally sure the new version of the App will need these files, but it is better to be safe than sorry. I just updated one of my Apps in this way and Hazel asked to remove the associated files. I told her to “Keep All”.
If you are looking for a reason to buy the Hazel App, this will sweeten the deal. If you were looking for an Application Deletion program you can get that and much more if you buy Hazel. I do not have any affiliation with the Hazel Noodle-soft people, I just use and like their App.
