Tweetbot

Early on I was into using Twitter a fair amount of the time, then I kind of dropped out for a while, but now I am back into it again. So, I started looking for a Twitter app on the App Store and found the excellent Tweetbot by Tapbots.

Overview

There are tons of Mac apps for accessing Twitter. Tweetbot got good reviews so I purchased it from the Mac App Store for $9, well worth the price. I am by no means a Twitter wonk, but I just wanted myself and Macessence to be more involved in the Twitterverse. That is my motivation for getting Tweetbot. So, I have Tweetbot running in the background on my iMac throughout the day. Be advised, they also make an iPad and iPhone version of their app, I have the iPad version which works just fine.

Tweetbot

Tweetbot does all the usual things that a Twitter app can do like direct messaging, following mentions, favorites, etc. Here is the main window:

It is similar to other tweeting apps. You can adjust font sizes and have multiple accounts as well. I have my personal account and the Macessence account. But, there are a couple of things that I think are really cool; the “Mute Filters” feature and “Multiple Column View”.

Lets say you have several people or organizations you are following on Twitter. One of those people is just going crazy updating their feed, you just don’t have time for it right then. You don’t want to unfollow them. In Tweetbot you can “mute” that person for a while. Click their Avatar for their account and you will be taken to this window:

Click on the gear in the upper left hand corner and you will be presented with this menu:

Select “Mute” and you will be asked for how long:

Choose the time interval that suits you and move on. Once you “mute” someone Tweetbot asks if you wish to delete their posts. If it is someone I wish to follow at a later time I usually tell the app to leave the posts.

“Mute” is such a cool feature! I really like it. It is very useful if you do not wish to remove someone from your feed permanently, but just need a little “peace and quiet” for a bit.

Since we are running a bit long I am going to cover the “Multiple Column View” feature in a future article. It is a very useful feature as well.

Conclusion

Tweetbot is a very sophisticated, well thoughtout Twitter application. It has more bells and whistles than I have time to cover. Suffice it to say, it is worth your dinero for sure. It is my “go to” app for tweeting.
