Malwarebytes has been an anti malware company on the PC side of things for many years. I have used their software on PC’s, it works quite well. A while back I did an article on a nice little malware app for the Mac called Adware Medic. A few months ago Malwarebytes bought out Adware Medic. If you search for Adware Medic you now get this web page.

What Happened?

Here is what happened. A very good malware app for the Mac got bought up by an excellent, much larger malware company. They recognized good software and they incorporated it into their stable of malware apps, which by the way, work quite nicely on the PC side of things. But, the question remains, is the Adware Medic app, which now has the catchy title of Malwarebytes Anti-Malwware for Mac, essentially the same or really different?

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac

Here is the main screen of of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac (hereinafter referred to as MAMM):

It really does look the same as the old Adware Medic, but with a new name. And, MAMM seems to work about the same. When you run it you get this message at the end:

If you had malware it lists it and then you tell the app to clear it out. It requres a restart upon completion, of course.

There is one thing that I wanted to mention and that is after you run MAMM it takes you to this page:

You are seeing the tip of the iceberg in this screenshot. The page extends way down with all kinds of suggestions and support tips about malware on the Mac. A very nice touch in my opinion.

As far as I can tell MAMM is free for the Consumer version. They will be offering a Business and Enterprise version for Mac this fall. I am sure those versions will cost some dinero, we will see.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is a nice app, very close to the old Adware Medic. The creator of Adware Medic is actually working for MAMM to continue development on this app and oversee other Mac development. I am sure MAMM will see further developemnt along with other Mac goodies. It is great to have a company the caliber of Malwarebytes developing for the Mac.
