iOS 9 Dictation

iOS 9 has improved upon the Dictation feature in the iPhone. I probably don’t use Dictation as much as some people, but when I do it sure comes in handy. Lets face it, typing on the iPhone screen, even the larger iPhones, is still a pain.

If you don’t have Dictation turned on or you have yet to use it, read on. Just go into your General Preferences and turn it on. Once you are in General scroll down and tap on Keyboard:

Scroll down to the bottom of the next screen and activate “Enable Dictation”:

Once Dictation is enabled you will be able to dictate text in many iOS applications. The Dictation feature usually displays a microphone like so:

Just tap the microphone and start dictating. It will look something like this:

When you are finished dictating tap “Done” and the dictation verbiage will appear in whatever app you are using. You can make corrections if necessary and send it to wherever it needs to go.

Speaking of corrections, the Dictation feature in iOS 9 is pretty decent. Not on the quality of a professional dictation app like Dragon Dictate, but still quite good.

I use the Dictation feature fairly frequently on my iPhone 6s. It is just a lot easier if I have to Message or Email a bunch of text from that device. Give it a try if you haven’t already, I think you will like it.
