Microsoft Word Alternatives – Part 3

In my two previous articles I covered some free and pay for Lean & Mean word processors as replacements for Microsoft Word. Today I want to mention a couple of alternative full-featured word processors for people that need more sophistication.

Nisus Writer Pro

Nisus Writer Express and Pro versions have been around on the Mac platform for years and years. The Pro version is a very sophisticated word processor package. It’s feature set is very close to Microsoft Word. It can import and export Word docs if your workflow demands it. Here is the main window:

There really is no way I can go through all the myriad of settings of this app. Suffice it to say, you can do just about anything you wish to do. It would be a good choice for long documents like books. You can download a free 15 Demo to try it out. I currently use Nisus Writer Pro for most of my word processor needs. It is overkill for what I do, but it works so nicely that I really don’t like to use anything else. Plus, I do have to interact with Word documents from time to time.

There is no iOS version of Nisus Writer. It really is a dedicated Macintosh word processor. Nisus Writer Pro costs $79. It is worth it if you are looking for a full-featured word processor. They do have some tutorial videos on their website.

Mellel

The Mellel word processor has also been around on the Mac platform for many years. You can do almost anything you wish with Mellel, but it’s forte is long document creation. It has all kinds of features for creating long documents. I suppose I would say that for an all around, full-featured word processor Nisus Writer Pro might be a better choice. However, if you are doing long documents (books, treatises, etc.) then Mellel might be a better choice for it’s long document organizational features. Here is the main window of Mellel:

The Inspector interface to the right side of the document window looks a bit intimidating, but it is fairly easy to use once you get used to it. As you can see, Mellel has tons of settings at your disposal.

Mellel costs $39 for the Mac version. They do have an iPad version for $19.99. I really like these word processor apps that have iPad versions. I like to continue work on projects on my iPad when I am away from my Mac so having an iPad version of software is really cool.

Conclusion

Well, this concludes our overview of Microsoft Word Alternative apps. There are many to chose from. I believe many Mac users would do just fine with a word processor in the Lean & Mean category. For more professional users there are the heavy hitters Nisus Writer, Mellel and even Mariner Write.
