Do you have email inbox overload? Who doesn’t! I run seven or eight email addresses for various purposes. As a result, I get lots of advertising and spam type emails. My email app was on total overload until I started unsubscribing to bunches of this stuff.

Yes, you can declare certain emails as spam and move them to a junk mail folder. That is all fine, but the thing to do to stop actually getting all this junk in the first place is to unsubscribe to it. I am not just talking about your email accounts inbox here, I am talking about going into your spam (junk mail) folder and unsubscribing to stuff in there also.
When you do that, most of the time you will not receive it any longer. You may be wondering why I say go into the junk mail folder and unsubscribe. Typically, I peruse my junk mail folder quickly looking for any email that is not spam. Sometimes spam filtering software puts good emails in there. You have to train the software to see that particular email as valid, so you really have to go through your junk mail, albeit quickly.
My junk mail folder was getting so full everyday it just took too long to go through it so I started unsubscribing from a lot of the emails in there. If you are interested in unsubscribing from junk, here is what to look for.
Most emails1, junk or otherwise, have an Unsubscribe link at the bottom below all the advertising:
When you click on the Unsubscribe link you are usually taken to a page that looks something like this:
Sometimes you’re unsubscribed automatically. However, sometimes you are given choices like this:
Be sure and read those choices carefully. Some entities publish several types of emails. There is usually an “unsubscribe all” choice in there somewhere.
Most of the time when you unsubscribe you don’t hear anything back from them. However, once in a while a more reputable company will send you and unsubscribe confirmation email:
Now, I just want to make a few closing observations. I have gotten into the habit of doing some unsubscribing in my email app almost everyday. To stay free of this junk you have to stay on top of it.
There are a few junk email people that say they unsubscribe you when you click on the link, but they do not do it. As far as I know, you cannot do much about that. Well, I take that back. If you are using a third party email account, often times you can go into the account and block certain emails at the server level. But, what to do about Apple’s iCloud Account Email? Apple does have some spam filtering going on at the server level. However, if you keep getting plagued by a certain junk email you can send it to Apple at email@example.com. I am sure they must do some checking, but they may decide to block it for you.
I want to mention one more thing here. I had an email account that was getting tons of junk email, about 75% of my total junk email to be exact. This was a contact type email from one of my websites, not my main email account by any means. So, I changed that email address slightly on the website and almost all of that spam went away. You probably cannot not do this with your main email account. However, if the problem is with a non mission critical account, it might be a solution for you.
My email workflow is so much more manageable since I started my “Unsubscribe Program”. Junk email is a total pain. We waste a lot of time with it. So, I encourage you to start an “Unsubscribe Program” of your own. It is a little bit of work which pays off with big dividends in the long run. You can always re-subscribe if you need to, but I rarely ever do that.
