2018 MacBook Air

We just bought a new MacBook Air for my wife. Here previous Air was about 7 years old. It is still running, but just too slow. The new Air is a little pricey, but a fantastic machine for people that do not need a MacBook Pro, but want something a little more than the MacBook. Here are the unboxing photos and my observations of this Mac.

MacBook Air 2018

We bought the Air at the local Apple Store. The service was great, buying the Air was pretty easy. Here is the original box:

Check out that clear tab on the right lower corner. All you do is pull the tab and all the plastic wrapping material just comes off the box. Just another example of Apple’s attention to detail.

My wife chose the Space Gray model:

She looked at them all, did not like the gold model, but thought the Space Gray was just right.

Here is the Air booting up. You just open it and it boots up automatically:

There are all kinds of things to go through in the setup process including setting up the Touch ID key in the upper right corner of the keyboard.

Here is the new and old Air side by side:

The new Air looks smaller, but the screen size is the same. It just has a smaller bezel around the edge of the Display. As you can see, the Trackpad is a bit larger.

Here are my observations of the 2018 Air after a few days of use. It is much faster than the old Air, which is to be expected. It is a very snappy machine. It came with MacOS Mojave 10.14.1. It is a little lighter than the old Air as well which my wife really likes. But, the biggest improvement to this Air in my opinion is the Retina Display. The old Air’s screen was somewhat difficult to read, especially smaller text. The new Air’s Retina Display is really excellent. Colors are much more vivid, but the text is so much easier to read! Oh yes, we must not forget that new fangled keyboard Apple uses these days. It requires a very light touch. I do not like it (I use a mechanical keyboard), but my wife loves it. To each his or her own I guess.

All in all, this is such a great machine “for the rest of us.” It is a little pricey, but my wife will have this machine for at least 6 years or more so we will get full value out of it. We bought the 128 GB model, she does not need any more space than that. It has the standard 8 GB of RAM. If you are thinking about getting a new Air, I encourage you to do so. It is a great little machine.
