People are working with smaller hard drives since most Macs come with SSD drives these days. SSD drive capacity is still fairly expensive which means you may need to use a smaller drive than you would like. The problem becomes maintaining enough storage space for your files on a crowded drive. One way to alleviate storage problems is to use Apple’s macOS Optimization feature which stores a lot of stuff on your iCloud space.
