Are You Using A VPN?

Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) has become very popular. A VPN really does provide added security for your online activities. I use PIA (Private Internet Access) on my iPhone and iMac. PIA works quite well and is priced reasonably. Here is my question, do you really need a VPN?

When To Use VPN’s

I have a VPN installed on my iPhone and on my iMac. My iMac is in my home office. If I am traveling and using my iPhone in Airports or other public spaces, I usually turn on the VPN. You never know what people will try when you are in public spaces.

If I am working in my home office, I rarely activate my VPN software. There is a good reason for that. Here is the network speed on my iMac using an Ethernet connection.

I have a fast connection which is great for streaming and downloading large files.

To activate a VPN on my iMac I boot up the PIA software and click the “Connect Button”.

When I activate the VPN on my iMac, my network speed is cut in half.

Sometimes it is even slower. Now 272 Mbps is till fairly fast for most activity, but “I feel the need for speed!”

There may be good reason for using a VPN on your home machine. More people are working from home today, which means they may deal with sensitive material or sensitive online activity. I live in a semi-rural area. My neighbors are not close. I think using a VPN on your iPhone is an easy decision. But it might not be necessary in a home environment.

If you need a VPN on your iPhone or Mac, there are plenty of services to choose from. You have to compare the cost with how the service is rated.
