Occasionally, things just don’t work correctly in the macOS Messages App in macOS Catalina. I am hoping some of these issues will be corrected in the Big Sur version of Messages. One of my go-to troubleshooting steps to fix macOS Messages issues is to clear the chat history. This how you do that if you are having Messages problems.
Clear Chat History
You clear Messages chat history in the user “Library Folder”. If you are using macOS Catalina, click on “Go” in the Finder menu bar.
If you do not see “Library” in the drop down list, then click on “Go to Folder” and enter ~/Library/Messages/. You can copy that path right out of this article, be sure and exclude the period at the end of the sentence.
Once you are in the User Library folder, scroll down and click on “Messages”.
You should see contents similar to this.
You need to Delete those three files, chat.db, chat.db.shm, chat.db.wal and then be sure to empty the Trash. Restart your Mac and you should be good to go for clearing Messages App history. This does not always fix Messages issues, but it does work at times and is worth a try.
If your Mac Messages App is acting weird, then try Deleting the App history for a possible fix.
