.Mac and Domains

Posted by

I have been doing web sites and dealing with their setup for about 8 or 9 years now. But for the life of me I cannot get the new “domain” feature to work on my .Mac account. Here is how the domain feature is supposed to work.

When you are in iWeb there is a drop-down menu that says “Setup Personal Domain”. When you select this it takes you through a series of questions. At the end of this process you type in your domain name and then Apple directs you to your domain registrar to obtain a “CNAME” (kind of like an alias pointing your domain back to web.mac.com). Once you have done the “CNAME” thing (or turned on forwarding) you are directed to finish the .Mac domain setup at the Apple web site. Then they tell you it may take 48 hrs. for the process to complete.

So, I did all this but the domain is not resolving to the site on .Mac. I have tried everything I can think of doing on my registrars site (godaddy.com), but with no success. Apple has very little info on this process on the .Mac area. I learned a great deal more from people on the Apple Discussion Boards. By perusing the Apple Discussions I discovered a great deal of information about the Apple domain process in general and about my particular registrar (godaddy.com) in particular. People had really good suggestions, but no matter what I have tried my site keeps resolving to the old address instead of to .Mac.

Yes, I have put in help tickets at my registrar and to Apple. The registrar responded back with general information about “forwarding” and “masking” a domain which was helpful, but did not resolve the problem. I have yet to receive Apple’s reply, but I am not hopeful.

If I am not successful I will have to continue to publish my iWeb site to a folder and then FTP it to my hosting area. This works OK, but it means some of the features that are available if the site is hosted on .Mac will not be available. I am very disappointed about this whole mess. One of the reasons I purchased a .Mac account was to host my woodworking domain on iWeb. It was not the most important reason, but it was on the list.

I will keep you posted on how this goes. Perhaps over the next few weeks I can figure out how to make this work. If you have any insights please don’t hesitate to e-mail me. Thanks.

Until We Meet Again,

Doug
