MacOptimizer 2

Posted by

OK, I am a sucker for programs that “optimize” the Mac OS. They all do similar things in cleanup, some better than others. Along these lines I have been test driving MacOptimizer 2 by Macappware. It seems to be pretty well designed, here is how it works.

Overview

MacOptimizer 2 is a good cleanup app and it also has some functionality that monitors things on your Mac like “Memory Hogs”, “Startup Items”, etc. I have used this app a few times, as far as I can see it does not mess up stuff on your Mac (always a good idea to do your own research on these types of apps). It is easy to use and has several functions like cache cleanup, optimizing, typical maintenance features, system tweaks, languages remover and others. Lets look at how these work.

Free Cache

The app opens to the Home Screen, but a good place to start is the “Free Cache” area:

You need to check off what caches you wish to clean. I just check them all. Cache cleaning is the area where you can gain back the most space on your HD. After checking your settings click “Apply”. The app suggests that you have no other applications running which is a pretty good idea. The app runs for a bit and presents a window telling you how much space it has gained back, in my case about 1 GB. Next I moved on to “Optimization”.

Optimization

In this section there are all kinds of settings. I only ran a few of them. A few of the settings are for older Mac OS’s.

You may not wish or need to run all of these built in utilities in this section, YMMV. What interested me most in the “Optimization” section was “Memory Hogs”. It is kind of intersting to check and see what, if any, running apps are hogging system memory (RAM).

Just click “Analyze” and this function presents your running apps and how much RAM they are using:

I thought that was pretty interesting. If you look at the bottom of this window you will see “Purge File Cache”. That is the same thing as recouping unused RAM which we have talked about previously.

Language Buster

All apps install various language capabilities. Most cleanup apps have a way of removing unused languages. This can free up a ton of space if you don’t think you will need those languages. MacOptimizer 2 calls this section “Language Buster”. When it first opens nothing is selected. The best way to do this is to “Select All” and then uncheck the language versions you wish to save.

Note that when you “Select All” the English languages are automatically NOT selected. So, if you are doing the English thing you can “Select All” and then click “Apply”. When it is finished removing the excess languages you will see this screen:

767 MB is a lot of space! This particualr optimization is definitely worth doing. Every time you install a new app it installs at least some languages you will never use.

Desktop Genie

Now THIS is a very cool feature!! I cannot tell you how many times I have worked on other peoples Macs that had a Desktop so cluttered they could not find anything! Absolutely amazing. Here is what “Desktop Genie” looks like:

Now, please take the time to click on the above screenshot and read the text of what “Desktop Genie” does and WHY it does it, I will wait . . . Yes, each file you have on your Desktop slows your Mac down just a little. When you do something on the Mac it has to redraw the Desktop most every time. So, “Desktop Genie” puts stuff in a folder, it cleans up your Desktop. And, you can exempt some files or folders in the lower box area.

Because I use PathFinder for my Mac Finder I am not able to use this feature, but if you have a messy Desktop I highly recommend giving it a try. What a great idea!

Conclusion

Well, that covers most of what MacOptimizer 2 is all about. It is a very capable Mac cleanup utility. So far it has not caused me any problems on my Mac (see my article on Quicken 2015 for a small caveat on this). If you are serious about Mac cleanup then you might prefer this app over some others. It supports Mac OS 10.7 through OS 10.10 Yosemite.
